My Place : Crux Duo
with Lloyd Van’t Hoff clarinet

My Place brings together original Australian and American music. It illuminates a personal sense of belonging, identity, and our universal search for a voice. In celebration of Crux Duo’s collaboration and closeness with composers of our time, the album includes six world premiere recordings – new works either composed or especially arranged for them as a duo, or individually. Having lived “away from home” for various extended periods in both their lives, Moore and Van’t Hoff share a unique kinship and  plurality of vision – through a mutual need to find a home in unfamiliar places.
Music by Leonard Bernstein, Martin Bresnick, Anne Cawrse, Erik Grizwold, Elena Kats-Chernin, Nick Russoniello, and Harriet Steinke.

(4.5 stars) “This is the story of two transplanted Australians who divide their lives between several Australian cities and East Coast USA. Such is the universality of contemporary music these days that it is virtually impossible to distinguish which of the eight pieces on this attractive and eclectic program are American and which are Australian; four of each, actually, with three women composers, too. The best known are Bernstein’s ebullient 1942 Clarinet Sonata and Elena Kats-Chernin’s 1996 Russian Rag — already an Australian classic, and good to see it in another of its myriad guises. Two short pieces by Adelaide-based composer Anne Cawrse provide moments of poetic reflection, as does Martin Bresnick’s My Resting Place, a moving testament to his Jewish heritage. Every listener will be able to hum along with Erik Griswold’s engaging take on Danny Boy, in which Lisa Moore shows her vocal-dramatic chops. Lloyd Van’t Hoff’s solo warbling of Nick Russoniello’s dawn birdsong is rhapsodic. Although this pair has only been playing together as Crux Duo since 2023, the uniformity and assuredness of the ensemble here is exemplary.”
